When Your Kid Is Struggling and You Don't Know How to Help

You've tried talking. You've tried consequences. You've tried giving space. But something is going on with your child and the usual approaches aren't working. Maybe they're withdrawing. Maybe they're acting out. Maybe they came to you with something you don't know how to handle.

At Lotus Rose, our therapists who work with young people understand that kids and teens don't process emotions the way adults do. They need a different approach — one that meets them at their developmental level and gives them tools they can actually use.

Common Reasons Families Come to Us

  • Anxiety — school anxiety, social anxiety, excessive worry, panic
  • Behavioral challenges — defiance, aggression, emotional outbursts
  • Trauma — abuse, witnessing violence, accident, loss of a parent

  • Grief — death of a parent, sibling, friend, or pet
  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation
  • Depression and emotional withdrawal
  • Faith and identity transitions
  • Divorce and family changes

Who Works With Kids and Teens

Pam Basinger specializes in children and teens. She uses Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and solution-focused approaches for behavioral challenges, ADHD, oppositional defiance, grief, and anxiety. Originally from Brazil, she brings a multicultural perspective and speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Pam has experience in school counseling and hospice care — she understands young people navigating loss.

Jaclyn Craig is open to working with teens. She draws from CBT, DBT, and ACT to help young people build practical tools, better understand their emotions, and feel more in control of their lives. Jaclyn brings warmth and humor into her work, creating space for teens to feel comfortable being honest.

Brynnlee Brunt works with teens via telehealth. She uses EMDR, EFT, and experiential approaches to support young people navigating anxiety, depression, and family or relationship challenges.

Our therapists create an environment where young people feel safe to be honest — not judged, not lectured, just heard.

Teen & Child Therapy FAQs

What ages do you work with at Lotus Rose?

Our therapists work with children, teens, and young adults. The specific age range depends on the therapist — some specialize in children dealing with behavioral challenges, ADHD, and grief, while others work with teens navigating trauma, anxiety, body image, and self-harm. Contact us and we'll match your child with the right therapist.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

Signs your child may benefit from therapy include persistent behavioral changes, withdrawal from friends or activities, declining grades, excessive worry or fearfulness, angry outbursts disproportionate to the situation, sleep problems, self-harm, talk of death or suicide, difficulty adjusting to divorce or family changes, or a noticeable personality shift. Trust your instincts — if something feels off, a free consultation can help you decide.

Will I know what's discussed in my child's sessions?

Confidentiality is important for building trust with your child. Your therapist will communicate with you about general progress and any safety concerns, but specific session content stays between your child and their therapist. This is what allows young people to open up honestly. Your therapist will explain this clearly at the start of treatment.

What therapy approaches do you use with teens and children?

We use age-appropriate adaptations of EMDR, ART, IFS, CBT, DBT, ACT, and experiential therapy. For younger children, this may include play-based elements. For teens, we use the same evidence-based modalities as adults but tailored to their developmental stage and communication style.
